I don’t consider myself to be the best photographer. In fact, I probably barely fit the description of “amateur” photographer. But I do enjoy going out and taking snaps, and taking photos on a holiday is very special to me as it is a perfect memory preserver.
Memories may fade, but photos always remain.
Even though I might not consider myself an expert, sometimes things just fall into place and I find myself with something truly stunning – or at least something I’m proud of. These are the truly special ones, the ones that get framed; (he ones that become headers on my blog).
So I’ve pulled out a bunch of my favourite photos from over the years into one post for your (and my) viewing pleasure.
Negril, Jamaica
Believe it or not, this one was taken on my iPhone 5 and has not been enhanced at all. I take zero credit for this because it was truly a spectacle of God that caused this, all I had to do was aim the camera right.
Parkinson Building, Leeds University, UK
The Parkinson Building is the face of Leeds University. It is the main entrance and part of the logo. I was on my way home from the train station when I noticed how beautiful it looked all lit up. I whipped out my DSLR, set a shutter of half a second and as I took the shot a double-decker bus drove past.
Like I said, sometimes good photography is just serendipity.
Aitutaki, Cook Islands
The Cook Islands is a beautiful paradise in the Pacific Ocean and I was lucky enough to spend my honeymoon here. It has the whitest sand I’ve ever seen. Just magic.
Hill Inlet, Whitsunday Islands, Australia
Speaking of white sand, Hill Inlet is one of Australia’s marvels. It’s a short walk up the hill from Whitehaven Beach and your reward is truly stunning.
Marlborough, New Zealand
If you visit the Marlborough region in New Zealand in autumn, this is all you’ll see: yellow grape vines everywhere. Such a beautiful part of the world, even better if you are a wine lover.
Castaway Cay, The Bahamas
My wife took me on a Disney Cruise 2 years ago and one of the stops is none other than Disney’s own private island. This is the view over the main beach. I love it because not only is it a stunning location, but it just makes me feel relaxed.
Newcastle Beach, Australia
I simply just love the colours of this one, and how the wall leads you into the photo. This was taken on a spur of the moment walk from the beach, to the Bogey Hole along sharp rocks without shoes. Adventure!
Cathedral Cave, The Catlins, New Zealand
I love this one because is not the sort of shot I would normally take, or take well. But the silhouettes of the walls and of Kynie just seem to contrast really well with the light mist of the cold beach outside.
Buckingham Palace, London, UK
This one just screams drama. The clouds overhead contrast perfectly with the bright green with the Palace seemingly a second thought in the background.
Negril, Jamaica
I don’t know what it is about the dead tree on the bright beach, but it just made for some interesting photography.
Rosella, Jervis Bay, Australia
These birds were so tame and it was just great fun playing with the depth of field.

Great reading Luke and fabulous photos.
Great photos Luke. Makes me wish I did have my camera at Kings Canyon now!!! I guess the answer is take the photos so as you said you have the best memories but don’t make that the only focus of the journey. Enjoy the moment.
