Active Adventures on the NSW South Coast

Famous for camping, exploration and outdoor adventure, the South Coast captures the beauty and personality of both the beach and the bush in one remarkable stretch of coast. There is no denying that with sweeping sandy beaches, rugged National Parks and numerous relaxing waterways, that the NSW South Coast is the ultimate adventure playground for the active traveller.

Shellharbour Region

Near the northernmost end of the South Coast lies Wollongong and the Shellharbour region. This area of coastline backs onto the Royal National Park which is jam-packed full of breathtaking adventure (in more ways than one). Enjoy a trek to world-famous beaches including Wattamolla and stunning Garie Beach. For a greater challenge take on the three-day-long hike The Coast Track, stretching from Bundeena to Otford. Traverse seasonal wildflowers, find magical swimming spots and view whales along this gorgeous 26km track.

If that’s not enough for you, head to Stanwell Park for an adventure from the sky. Hang-glide from the tops of phenomenal Bald Hill and enjoy a sensational view of the South Coast including the internationally recognised Sea Cliff Bridge, the most incredible monument along the Grand Pacific Drive. Or jump from 15,000 ft above sea level and enjoy the pastures and coast of Wollongong, with Skydive the Beach.

For the water lovers out there check out Albion Park Rainforest Canyoning Adventure. Just an hour south of Sydney, jump, glide and hop through waterfalls and stunning rock pools. This adventure has 5 different abseils into spectacular deep natural pools just near Albion Park, south of Lake Illawarra in the heart of Shellharbour.

Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley is one of the most naturally blessed areas near the South Coast, perfect for the active traveller. At the heart of the valley lies the Kangaroo River, an ideal location for kayaking, fishing, snorkelling and exploring the native flora and fauna of the region. Eurobodalla and Beyond

In the heart of Australia’s Oyster Coast, the Eurobodalla region of the South Coast is home to enchanting underwater adventures, mind-blowing fresh produce and magical wildlife encounters. For the active traveller, hire a kayak in Broulee or Durras and experience a unique stingray feeding encounter, or explore the crystal clear sapphire water’s of Wagonga inlet, abundant with marine life.

Batemans Bay is teeming with outdoor adventure activities. Go bushwalking within the Clyde River National Park or hire a bike and discover Batemans bay from the cycleway. If this pace is too slow for you, head to the Batemans Bay BMX Track! For cycling enthusiasts who love a challenge, the Mogo State Forest is a gorgeous, dense bushland filled with high energy mountain bike trails, awaiting your exploration.

One of the most spectacular active travel adventures on offer in the Eurobodalla Region takes place in Narooma. Narooma is a sparkling seaside haven perfect for surfing adventures and for discovering the magnificent shoreline. For a day on the greens, have a round at the scenic Narooma Golf Club, then enjoy the world-famous produce including their farm fresh oysters at the Narooma Oyster Festival.

But the most unforgettable experience occurs just 9km off the coast of Narooma, at Montague Island. Snorkel, frolic and play with hundreds of Australian Fur Seals and Fairy Penguins in remarkably clear water. Stay the night at the newly refurbished Lighthouse Keepers’ Quarters and soak up the wildlife in a peacefully isolated environment. And during migration season, you are likely to spot Humpback and Southern Right Whales passing the island.
