What is it about traveling that makes it so appealing? What do you look for on your journey to make the adventure truly unique? I travel to find unique experiences that will create a long lasting memory for me, and a great story for everyone else: Something that you can only find by being there. Guidebooks might help orient us and give us a kick start, but if everyone follows the guidebook, everyone will have the same carbon copy vacation.
I spent 4 days soaking up the sun in Miami. I did many cool things in this 4 days, none of which make an incredibly compelling story (unless you call “We sat on the beach for 6 hours and didn’t get sunburnt” compelling). That is except for the bar that my friend and I visited one night.
We were staying in an apartment along Washington St and as we were walking back late one night, a neon sign beckoned. It read “The Lounge: Barber Shop and Bar”. These were two words I didn’t know existed together, much less at 11pm at night. I’d actually probably never been this excited. It didn’t even matter that I’d had a chop not 10 days prior.
My friend sat down in the chair for a shave and I got us a couple of drinks. The steady pulse of house music massaged the air while essence of hair products filled the senses. A short while later my sipping slowed and the clipping began. For being 11pm on a Monday night, the barber actually did an excellent job. He even had intentional pauses for me to take a drink. What a gentleman.
Unfortunately it was a Monday so the actually night club part was basically empty, but this didn’t stop me from experiencing what ended up being an expected highlight of my 4 days in Miami.
